Trick or treat?

This weekend we had a Halloween party at the school for our English students.

Our school decorations

JoJo, Liesl and Snow

Our boss Leslie, and her two boys. Little Nathan and Tony (who is one of my students)

Liya, our school manager, and her daughter Angel (who is one of my students)

Liesl was asked to be the host for the evening, and we had to put together a presentation on Halloween, what it means and why we celebrate it. Which we did - complete with scary screams, witches cackles, howling wolves and creaking door sounds.

I'm not sure our Chinese folk realised that Halloween is regarded as the one day of the year that the dead can roam the Earth freely, and their spirits can enter the bodies of the living, giving them a second chance at life. We tried to explain this is the simplest of terms and tone it down a bit - except we still heard some children silently sobbing with fear...

Anyway, that was soon forgotten once the games started. Our activities for the evening included:

The Costume show - our little learners had to walk the catwalk to show off their scary (mostly not-so-scary) costumes.

Bobbing for Apples
 - which was sort of a watered down affair... seen as the Chinese are extremely worried about germs and the passing on thereof, we could only use one apple per basin per kid... which kind of defeats the purpose of the game, but hey. They don't know any better, so I suppose it all worked out well.

Our landlady and her daughter, Sarah. Sarah is also one of my students

Little Winston. He was not having a good day. He was scared by all the people there. Poor thing. He's such a sweet little boy.

Sunny, one of my students

Emily, she is our translator's daughter and also one of my students. Ironically, Emily spoke ZERO English when she started in my class... and yet her mother is our English translator... seems a little weird to me.

Lucky, he is also one of my students

Crystal

Angel

Cherry and her mom - also one of my students

Tony and his group.

Mummies - Kids had to wrap their parent in toilet paper to make a Mummy. The fastest team won.

Trick or Treat - we had to teach the kids how to say this. If they knocked on a classroom door and said it correctly, they got some candy. They were also taken out into the shopping mall to go trick or treating at the other pre-approved and pre-stock-with-candy shops.
