I'm just a Broadway Baby...

We had planned to see some Broadway shows with our friend Marielle.

I absolutely love the theatre! Seeing shows on Broadway is the pinnacle of theatre experiences. The one thing that gives my life meaning. LOL.

I want a wall like this in my house...

I was uber-excited to be going to three shows – and of course stalking the players at the stage door.

We went to see:

Anything Goes

The story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Billy Crocker is a stowaway in love with heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin aid Billy in his quest to win Hope. The musical introduced such songs as  "Anything Goes" "You're the Top" and "I Get a Kick Out of You"

This was such an amazing show. A typical old-school Broadway musical. Complete with sequins, feathers and of course loads of tap dancing AND Oscar-Winner-Liza friend- Cabaret Star , Joel Grey starred as Moonface.

A pure pleasure to watch, and Liesl and I were singing the theme song for days thereafter – it’s like bubblegum for the brain.

Anything Goes

End of the Rainbow

This is about the last few weeks of Judy Garland’s life, and takes place in London around her tour.

Tracie Bennett played Judy Garland, a role she originated on the West End. I thought she did a marvelous job of sounding and acting like Judy (with a bit of Liza thrown in for fun). However, I wasn't a fan of the story or the characterisation of Judy. I know it concentrated around her final "manic" days on this earth, however it's all the story focused on. The character of Judy was quite two dimensional. Only focusing on her drug and alcohol addiction, and her abusive nature. There was no "down time", she was constantly manic and screaming and crying. I found the whole experience quite exhausting - I suppose that's how you WOULD feel if you had been friends with Judy... nonetheless, everyone has a softer side... I wish the play would have showed a bit of the "Judy Magic", instead of glossing over it all together....

The Best Man

This was the super-celeb cast play of the vacation. Eric MacCormak; John Laraquette; James Earl Jones; Candice Bergen and Angela Lansbury! What an awesome cast!!!

The play itself was extremely enjoyable. A political drama/comedy about an upcoming presidential election.

We did some backstage stalking - which is my favourite pastime.

At this point, I would also like to bring up a previous Broadway experience – in 2008 I had the fantastic opportunity to see Patti LuPone in “Gypsy”. This is probably, THE MOST AWESOME theatre experience EVER. It was electric.
Seeing Broadway legend Patti LuPone play one of the most legendary and iconic musical theatre roles EVER was truly amazing.
